Our Story
From a three-year BSc Microbiology programme in 2005 to a research-driven department with dedicated PG studies, certificate courses, and its own herbal garden.
The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2005 with a three-year degree in B.Sc. Microbiology. Further, the Post-Graduation (M.Sc. Microbiology) programme was introduced in 2015. The main objective and focus of the department is to guide and impart innovative education to provide trained and efficient microbiologists to society.
The department endeavours to specialise its students in distinct areas of microbiology, and also offers certificate courses such as mushroom cultivation, biofertilizer production, vermicomposting, and sustainable aquaculture, helping students build entrepreneurship skills.
The best innovative practices of the department include Microdoc, NET-coaching, and placement training programmes. The department also maintains a garden – an Oxy Zone with flowering and medicinal plants – along with a herbal garden featuring plants prized for their anxiolytic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and acne-treating properties.
Faculty members hold research projects funded by TNSCST (Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology) and regularly publish in peer-reviewed journals. Guest lectures, seminars, webinars, and workshops are held frequently, inviting distinguished academicians from renowned institutions, and students are encouraged to develop new methodologies and pursue innovative startup ideas.
